Electric Vehicle Charger Installation

Auckland based electricians

A dedicated EV charger makes charging an electric vehicle more convenient and can offer substantially faster charging than a standard household socket.

Residential and Commercial

Electric Vehicle Chargers

An EV (Electric Vehicle) is only as convenient as your charging setup. Get it right and you plug in when you park and forget about it.
Get it wrong and you’re dealing with slow charging, tripped circuits and extension leads running all over the place.

At Vanguard Electrical, we install EV chargers for homes and businesses across Auckland.
We’ll look at your place, explain your options in plain English, and install something safe, tidy and suited to how you actually use it.

EV Chargers For Homes

Most home installs are simple, and a dedicated charger is far faster and safer than relying on a standard power point/portable granny charger.

We’ll check your switchboard and supply, find the best spot for the charger, and handle the compliance paperwork.

For businesses and multi-unit properties

Commercial charging has more moving parts. You might have several chargers sharing limited power, different people using them, and a need to know who’s charging and how much.

We design systems that handle this including:

• Load management so multiple chargers can share your site’s power safely, often avoiding a costly supply upgrade
• NFC and RFID access so only authorised users can charge
• Usage tracking for reimbursing staff, billing tenants or reporting
• Room to grow so you can add chargers later without starting over

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the common questions people ask us about EV Charger installations. Click or tap the question to expand the section for the answer.
If there's anything that we've missed feel free to reach out using the contact information at the bottom of the page.

Can I charge my EV using Solar Power?

Yes! Some smart chargers support solar-aware charging, (aka solar diversion). These systems prioritise charging your car whilst you're generating excess solar, instead of exporting it back to the grid.
We can help you find a solution that works with your system, and for your needs.

Can I power my house from my EV?

Vehicle-to-Home "reverse charging" with a bi-directional EV charger is not yet available in New Zealand, although it is in the trial period. AS/NZS 4777.1:2024 recognises bidirectional chargers for reverse power flow, but there aren't any commercially available solutions yet.

The good news is, that if your car supports Vehicle-to-Load functionality, we are able to add a generator inlet socket to your house. This allows you to use your EV's battery as a backup system in the event of a power outage.

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger you choose and your home’s wiring. As a rough guide:

  • A standard wall charger costs about NZ$500–800, plus around NZ$700 for installation.
  • A smart wall charger costs about NZ$1,000–1,500, plus NZ$700–1,000 for installation.

Final cost depends on installation complexity, the distance from your switchboard to the charger, the charger type, and any electrical upgrades needed.
A free site assessment or quote is the best way to get an exact figure.

Can I install a charger if I rent or live in an apartment?

Possibly, but you’ll need permission first. Tenants need their landlord’s written consent, and apartment owners usually need body corporate approval too, particularly if the charger connects to shared wiring or common property. We are happy to help with the technical side of the discussion if needed.

What’s the difference between a standard and a smart charger?

A standard charger simply charges your car.
A smart charger adds app control, charging schedules, usage tracking, and sometimes load management.
That lets you charge when power is cheapest, and it avoids overloading your home’s supply.

Which EV charger should I choose?

We have several EV Chargers which we recommend. Each charger has different features, performance, and pricing.
Tell us a little about your set up and we'll be able to tell you which one we recommend for your budget and needs.

Do you supply and install EV chargers?

Yes. Vanguard Electrical can take care of the complete installation, from helping you choose a suitable charger through to installation, testing and certification. We'll make sure the installation is completed safely and in accordance with applicable New Zealand electrical standards.
