How do I know if my switchboard needs upgrading?
Common signs include circuits that keep tripping, a switchboard that’s warm or buzzing, old ceramic fuses instead of circuit breakers, and not enough room to add anything new. If you’re planning a heat pump, EV charger or renovation, it’s worth getting your board checked first. We’ll tell you straight whether it needs work or is fine as it is.
Why does my power keep tripping?
Usually it’s an overloaded circuit, a faulty appliance or a fault in the wiring. Resetting it is fine, but if it keeps happening, it’s worth getting looked at. We’ll track down the cause and fix it properly, rather than just patching it.
Can I add extra power points to my home?
Almost certainly. We can add power points where you actually need them, like the home office, kitchen bench, garage or deck, and run a dedicated circuit if a new appliance needs one. The cost depends on how far we have to run the cable and how easy it is to get to.
Can I do my own electrical work in New Zealand?
Only a small amount of simple work is legal for homeowners. Most electrical work, including anything involving new wiring or your switchboard, must be done by a registered electrician. It’s for your safety and your insurance. If you’re unsure, ask us before you start.
Is it worth switching to LED lighting?
In most cases, yes. LEDs use a fraction of the power of halogen or incandescent bulbs and last far longer, so they usually pay for themselves over time. They also come in a range of warm and cool tones, so your home doesn’t have to feel like an office.
